Cliff jumping spots in Sierra de Guadarrama
Guadarrama is appealing because it's the only moderately mountainous area near Madrid. If you want to escape for a day or a weekend, it delivers: you can be there in an hour. However, it's not exactly breathtaking, at least not in my opinion. If I had to sum up the Sierra in a few words, I'd say: rocky mountains, dry scrubland, and proximity. Located north/northeast of Madrid, it's clearly more of a quick getaway than a destination in itself.
You can take a long hike, climb to a pass, sit on a rock and simply look around. Or just walk without giving it too much thought. There are some waterfalls and nice viewpoints, but don't expect anything extraordinary. The best thing is that it's good year-round. In summer, it's a complete refuge from the city heat. Autumn is even better because it's usually rained, and the rivers and waterfalls are flowing with more water. In winter, there's snow, and you can even ski. In spring, everything thaws, and the water level rises, making the hikes a bit more interesting.
The trails aren't usually very crowded, except for specific areas like Peñalara, which fills up very quickly practically year-round. The only ski resort in the Sierra is Puerto de Navacerrada. It's not particularly worthwhile as a resort in itself, but if you want to get your fix and do some fast runs without leaving Madrid, it does the job.
Guadarrama isn't spectacular, but it's practical. And often, that's all that's needed. Cliff jumping spots in Sierra de Guadarrama.
