Lake Cootharaba

It's the kind of lake you've probably seen in TikTok videos, with kangaroos leaping out of the water at sunrise against a vibrant orange sky. Well, it's right here.

There's a campground in this area called Habitat Noosa Everglades Eco Camp, but it's a bit pricey, so you can also camp independently in some nearby areas. We, for example, stayed near Boreen Point, and came from there to see the sunrise.

The sunrise experience was, honestly, a bit of a disappointment. The kangaroos weren't leaping out of the water like in the videos; they were further out. Maybe they'll position themselves there if you're lucky, but not at that moment. The spot for watching the sunrise is okay, but it's nothing extraordinary like it's made out to be.

It also depends a lot on the water level. After rain, it can be higher, and perhaps the kangaroos come closer to the shore. The day we went, the water was quite low, which didn't help much.

That said, the place has one great thing going for it: it's teeming with kangaroos. There are tons of them, they're everywhere, you can see them moving around, running through the open fields, and interacting with each other. It's a fantastic place to see kangaroos up close.
