Earnslaw Burn Track
The Earnslaw Burn Track is one of New Zealand's most beautiful trails, winding for hours through the forest to reach the lower Mt. Earnslaw valley, offering views of the glacier and several waterfalls cascading down the mountain.
The route consists of a section to emerge from the forest (about 4-6 hours) and another hour to reach the waterfalls and get the best views of the glacier.
For reference, the complete route that most people take to the glacier area is around 27-30 km round trip, depending on how far you go. The total elevation gain can be approximately 900-1,200 m, but varies considerably depending on the GPS and the route taken.
It's not a technically extreme route, but it is quite challenging: roots, mud, fallen trees, small gullies, water crossings, and sections where the trail is easily lost.
