Bygdin Lake
Huge lake Bygdin lies at roughly 1,060 meters above sea level in the Jotunheimen region, stretching about 32 kilometers from east to west. Renowned for its pristine waters and stunning alpine backdrops, the lake is most famously crossed by M/B Bitihorn boat, operated by JVB AS. This historic boat runs daily during the main summer season, connecting the two primary ports at Bygdin Fjellhotel on the eastern end and Eidsbugarden on the western side. The journey offers spectacular views of towering peaks and glaciers, making the ferry ride itself a memorable experience.
Several mountain cabins are located along Bygdin’s shores, offering comfortable bases for both short excursions and multi-day treks. One of the most notable is Torfinnsbu, a DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) cabin that sits along the water’s edge, surrounded by rugged mountain terrain. Hikers can also find lodging at Eidsbugarden, which provides a warm, communal atmosphere and easy access to numerous trails leading deeper into the Jotunheimen National Park.
Whether you’re hopping off at Torfinnsbu to explore hidden valleys or heading to Eidsbugarden for a more relaxed stay, the boat service on Bygdin makes it convenient to mix scenic ferry crossings with rewarding hikes.
