Neuer Wildenstein
The route crosses the Saxon Switzerland National Park, going through the mysterious mixed forests of the Elbe sandstone massif. I did it in December at -6°C, and the completely frozen landscape created a magical atmosphere that's hard to beat.
The ideal thing is to start very early to enjoy the sunrise from the Neuer Wildenstein viewpoint. To reach it you'll have to climb a very narrow staircase located within the nature reserve.
Then the circular route continues through coniferous and deciduous forests, passing by the huge sandstone formations that give this spectacular region its name. It's a beautiful hike in winter, although it's also very much worth it in spring or summer. Also, along the whole route we barely came across other hikers.
