Tongariro National Park
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand's most famous hiking trail and one of the world's most spectacular volcanic treks. It traverses an almost lunar landscape of active craters, lava fields, sulfur lakes, and mountains sacred to the Māori people. The trail is very popular and can get quite crowded on some days. The weather is extremely changeable, and the trail is very exposed to wind and cold, even in summer.
